The History of Bridge House, Ambleside The Bridge House in Ambleside is a charming and unique 17th-century building that stands over Stock Beck, a small river that flows through the town. This tiny house, with its distinctive slate roof and quaint windows, has become an iconic symbol of the Lake District. Originally built by the influential Braithwaite family as an apple store for their nearby orchards (and likely to help avoid land tax by being constructed on the bridge), it has served many purposes over the centuries — including a counting house for local mills, a tea room, a weaver’s shop, a cobbler’s workshop, and even a family home for eight people!Today, the Bridge House is owned and cared for by the National Trust and is open to the public. Visitors can step inside its two small rooms and experience a glimpse into the past. Its unique location and fascinating history make it a favourite attraction for tourists and locals alike — a wonderful reminder of the ingenuity and simple beauty of the Lake District.
